I Thought I Was Building a Career. I Was Losing My Freedom.

August 23, 2026

About a year ago, I left my corporate job. I had spent more than 13 years working in the corporate world.

For a long time, I thought I was on the right path. Work for a good company. Get a better salary. Get promoted. Move into a bigger role. Make more money.

And eventually, I thought, I would have more freedom.

It sounded like a good deal.

From the outside, corporate life looked attractive. Good salaries, promotions, benefits and big brands. Everything seemed to point towards a better life.

But somewhere along the way, I started asking myself a simple question.

Where is the freedom?

Where Is the Freedom?

I could make money, but I could not always decide how to spend my time.

I could not simply take a day off when I wanted. I could not always spend time with my family when I wanted.

There were years when I missed Diwali. I missed Holi. Sometimes I missed important moments with my family because I had to work.

What kind of freedom was that?

And then there was my health.

I spent most of my working day sitting. I did not have enough time for exercise. I became more sedentary, more tired and less active.

I knew something was wrong.

I also saw some of my colleagues pass away far too young.

It made me think.

What Was I Chasing?

What exactly are we chasing?

A bigger salary?

A better designation?

A bigger company?

And at what cost?

I don't think corporate jobs are bad. They can provide stability, good money and valuable opportunities.

But sometimes, the price is your time.

And time is something you can never get back.

I eventually realised that I was living according to someone else's schedule.

That wasn't the life I wanted.

I Finally Left

I decided to give it up.

And eventually, I left.

When I finally did, I felt something I had not felt for years.

I breathed.

I felt free.

Today, I work independently. I have control over my time. I can decide when I work and when I take a break.

If I want to take a long vacation, I don't need to ask anyone for permission.

I can spend more time with my family. I can work on things that actually matter to me.

I am not saying everyone should leave their job. That would be foolish advice.

But I do want people to ask themselves one question.

Are you living your life, or only following someone else's schedule?

What Freedom Means to Me Now

You have one life.

You are not a robot. You are not a resource. You are a human being.

I realised this trap quite late.

Many of my friends are still inside it. And I don't blame them.

I was there too.

For years.

I only want them to stop for a moment and think about what freedom actually means to them.

Maybe freedom is not a bigger salary.

Maybe it is having time for your children. Maybe it is being able to exercise. Maybe it is celebrating Diwali with your family.

Maybe it is waking up without an alarm.

Maybe it is simply having control over your own day.

You don't necessarily need a big brand or a huge salary to experience freedom.

You need to understand what freedom means to you.

And then slowly build a life around it.

I am still building mine.

I am not there yet.

But today, at least, I feel like I am living it.

And that feels very different.

If you can relate to this, perhaps it is time to think about your own definition of freedom.
